TAKE CARE OF YOU DURING YOUR DIVORCE.

You need to take care of yourself during your divorce. Worry can be overwhelming right now. You may feel isolated, financially desolate, and unsure of your future. We know that we are seeing you during one of the most difficult times in your life. We know how emotionally trying divorce and child custody cases are, even in the best circumstances, and many people do not get those best circumstances.

Take care of yourself during your divorce.

If you are grappling with divorce or how to protect your child, it is critical that you take time to care for yourself as well. Listen to how you talk to yourself. Don’t let your own voice be abusive to you. Talk to yourself kindly. Be understanding of your mistakes. You are under a lot of stress, and you may be more forgetful and short-tempered than usual. Your children need you to be mentally healthy. You need to take care of yourself during your divorce to be sure that you are there for the other people in your life that love you.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF BY GETTING SOME EXERCISE DURING YOUR DIVORCE–EVEN IF IT IS JUST ONE, NICE, LONG WALK WHEN YOU FEEL OVERWHELMED.

Make sure that you get some exercise. That may sound minor, but nothing will make you feel more emotionally capable than a good, hard workout. You might think about joining a martial arts class, or taking up cycling. Getting vigorous exercise regularly is a great way to take care of yourself during your divorce.

SPEND TIME WITH PEOPLE THAT CARE ABOUT YOU

Spend time with friends and with extended family that can emotionally support you. Speak with a coworker, a therapist, or a member of your church. There are also some wonderful support groups that can help you keep a healthy frame of mind. Divorce Care is a popular support group that I have recommended to many clients. Find a meeting near you. If you don’t have anyone to talk with, most churches offer emotional support even if you are not a believer. You may feel like hiding from the rest of the world, but you need a human touch right now. This is the time to put that oxygen mask firmly on your own face. Even if you don’t think you need it.
