What Are They Looking for During an Adoption Home Study?

The adoption process can be grueling, even for people who have been through it before. It will get to the point where you feel like you’ve signed your name a hundred times. As frustrating as the process can be, when you consider the final result, it is worth every ounce of trouble. Our Tomball adoption lawyers have helped our clients with their adoptions for years.

Some of these clients sailed through the adoption process with flying colors. Others did not fare so well. However, the good news is that, as long as you’re honest and take the process seriously, you should be fine. Our adoption attorneys in Tomball are beside their clients through every step of the process. They will ensure that the process is as painless as possible.

One of the most intimidating and most important parts of the adoption process is the home study. Before the judge is going to approve any adoption, they need to know that the petitioners are ready for another child. The best way to know for sure is to observe you in a natural setting. Since you’ll be raising your child in your home, it makes sense for this interview to take place there.

Here, we will do our best to explain the home study process. We will also explain why it is so important. If you have any questions about your own adoption, feel free to contact us right away. We can help explain what the home study entails and how you can best prepare for it.

The Caseworkers Wants to See if Your House is Clean and Safe

One of the reasons the caseworkers come to your home is because they want to see how you live. There are three general types of people in this world. There are those people who are obsessed with cleaning their homes. There are other people whose house seems like a tornado came through. And then there are the rest of us.

Most people keep a clean and neat home. However, when it comes to the adoption home study, they are looking for specific things. For example, do you allow recyclable bottles to accumulate by the back door? Do you have your electrical outlets overloaded? These are the things that could pose a safety risk for an adopted child.

You’ll Be Asked to Describe Your Parenting Style and Behaviors

Once the caseworkers go through and do a cursory inspection of your house, they’ll sit down for an interview. Both petitioners, or a lone petitioner if that’s the case, will have to answer a list of questions. These will be, for the most part, open-ended questions that have no right or wrong answer.

The person conducting the home study wants to see what kind of parent you’ll be. They want to know your position on discipline and punishment. Their job is to find out if you’ll make a good parent.

The Person Doing the Home Study Will Look at the Sleeping Arrangements

This may seem strange at first, but the caseworker will need to see your sleeping arrangements. Do you have enough bedrooms to house another child? Are your boy and girl children in separate bedrooms? If not, how old are the children? Are any of them over the age of 5? 12?

If your petition is for the adoption of a three or four-year-old little girl, then you’ll need to demonstrate that you have a safe and clean room for this child. It is not a good idea to tell the caseworker that you plan on having the little girl share a room with your two teenage sons. You need to use common sense and ensure that you’re careful about how you situate your children’s bedrooms.

Everybody Who Lives in the Home Must Be Interviewed

When you adopt a child, they will presumably live with you. The courts need to know that the people living in your home don’t pose a danger to your adoptive child. For example, if your spouse’s brother just got out of prison and is living with you, even temporarily, there is a good chance your adoption won’t go through.

Of course, your Tomball adoption lawyer will do everything they can to make sure this doesn’t happen. However, if you expect to adopt a child, you need to make sure you can maintain a lifestyle that the court will approve of.

If You’re Worried About the Home Study, Contact an Adoption Attorney in Tomball

Learning that you’ll have to participate in a home study as part of the adoption process can be scary. You already feel like you’ve been forced to divulge much more about yourself than you would have liked. You have taken off work several times to attend yet another court hearing. It seems like the process gets harder rather than easier the further along you go.

There’s a good reason for this. The closer you and your adoption attorney in Tomball get to the final hearing, the more critical each stage becomes. A great percentage of people who file an initial petition for adoption never follow through with it. They just want to test the waters and see if they’re ready to move forward with an adoption.

The people who make it all the way through the process must be willing to jump through dozens of hoops and bare their souls. It hardly seems fair at times.

This is why we recommend that you call our office and schedule an appointment with one of our Tomball adoption lawyers. They understand how grueling the adoption process can be. They know what is at stake and how badly you want things to work out.

They will do whatever they can to help prepare for the home study. They can give you an outline of what the process entails. They can also ask you if there are any troubled areas you’re concerned with. Let them help you figure out your options and work toward completing your adoption.
